Woodstock 1969: Finger Food like You’ve Never Tasted Before

Listed as one of Rolling Stones’ magazines, 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll, the Woodstock Festival is one that history will remember for generations to come. An audience of over four hundred thousand people attended the festival to hear 32 musical acts perform on a dairy farm located in the New York State. It ran from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Some of the most well known artists who performed at the festival were Joan Baez, Santana, Janis Joplin, The Who and Ravi Shankar, among many others.Legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, performing on the final day, famously played a version of the American National anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner” using an amplifier, which shocked many at the time. Woodstock 1969 took place while the Vietnam War was on, and its legacy lives on in the USA and around the world.

In our very own Calcutta, a tiny cafe situated in the lane between the Greek Orthodox Church and the Kalighat Tram Depot has named itself Woodstock 1969. Its whitewashed walls are adorned with posters of the musical giants who performed at the festival, all those years ago. It is a small space, with what some would call cramped seating arrangements, but it serves utterly amazing food. Fast food and Finger Food are the main categories, but you can tell from their flavour that they were prepared with ample care.

Among Burgers, the special attractions are the Monster Meat Burger and the American Breakfast Burger. Priced at Rs 209 and Rs. 169 respectively, these are some of the lowest prices for good burgers in the whole city. Another noticeable feature of their menu is the variety of chicken wings. Most restaurants only serve one or two types of chicken wings. Woodstock 1969 serves seven types- Spicy,  Teriyaki, Cheese Garlic, Kentucky Style, Cuba Libre, Buffalo, and Barbeque honey chicken wings. All time favourites like momos and nachos are not forgotten wither. Each type of chicken wing is covered in a flavourful sauce, crusted or non-crusted, depending on the recipe. Each type of chicken wing is available at an amount between Rs 150 and Rs 200. Getting 6 pieces of chicken wings at these low prices is like a dream come true.

And finally, we come to the wonderful world of Woodstock 1969 beverages. Spiced Hot Chocolate and Hot Cheesy White chocolate are bound to attract any foodie who loves to experiment. Harry Potter fans have been known to delight in their hot or cold Butterbeer. This frothy drink contains the right amount of butterscotch, vanilla and a dash of beer to transport you all the way to the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade.

Others might favour a refreshing glass of Strawberry Coke (Rumour has it that Chilli’s, that American Cuisine giant, serves a similar tasting drink called Cherry Cola. That drink is obviously priced much, much higher). If you want to go desi with your drink, you could try the Meetha Paan Shake or the Soan Papri Shake. Woodstock has something for everybody.
