The Cycle of Monotony

Rhea came home from college. Tired and exhausted. She had something to eat, went to her room and turned her laptop on. After a while she got bored. So she checked her phone for notifications. After spending hours on her phone and her laptop in turns, it was time for her dinner. She had dinner and went to sleep. “Tomorrow is a new day”, she sighed as she tried to get some sleep.

Rhea heard the doorbell ring. She woke up, startled. Was it morning already? Had she missed the alarm? The doorbell rang a second time. Rhea’s parents were off to one of her cousin’s wedding for the week. They had insisted upon taking Rhea along, but she had come up with the excuse of her mid-terms being just a week away. This had thus left the house, entirely to herself, making it one of the best weeks of her life. The doorbell rang a third time.
Rhea collected herself and opened the door, to find a stranger standing in front of her. He was tall and lean. One could call him somewhat attractive. He was dressed in a black suit, black trousers and a grey tie. He flashed a smile, which lacked warmth, and was clearly, trained. His eyes were blank, dead almost.  He appeared to be a salesman from the look of it. He was carrying a box with him. Not exactly a briefcase, a shiny black box, that one could not help but notice. As Rhea was staring at it, he said,

“Good morning, ma’am”
“Good morning”

“Won’t you let me in?”
And before Rhea could say anything he entered the house and made himself comfortable on the couch.
“Sure”, said Rhea sarcastically.

The man looked at Rhea, curiously. Rhea clenched her fists as she felt a shudder going down her spine.
“I’ll not have tea, or coffee, or juice. In fact, I do not need anything but your attention.”

Rhea was trying very hard to keep her calm, so she said nothing. The man continued, all the while, smiling.
“I see you are very interested in this box of mine. Now, why wouldn’t you be? You know it. You’ve heard of it.”
Gathering her thoughts and herself, Rhea said “Have I?”
“Well of course you have. It’s trending in the market right now. Everyone wants this box. Everyone you hold dear to you, wants you to have this box. And I’m here to give it to you at a special offer.”
“What’s inside this box?”
“Oh! That’s not the important question, my dear. It’s the box that matters. And once you have it, be very careful, you will be the envy of everyone.”
“How can I want something without even knowing what’s inside it?”
“Because, everyone does. Everyone wants the box. And you will only know what’s inside once you buy it”, he said, his fake smile brighter than ever.
There was something in his eyes. They were so…cold, and had something so eerie about them. He looked Rhea in the eye and said,
“You have to want the box, my dear. It is this box that holds the key to your future. It will lead you to your destiny.”

Rhea takes the box.  No, she wants it. She wants to know what’s inside.

“What’s the price?”
“The price you pay for it, is so meager compared to what you will have once you get this box…”

“What is the price?”, Rhea asks again.
“Open it…”
As Rhea is about to do so, the man says “The price you pay, is all of your dreams and aspirations.”

Next morning, Rhea woke up and got ready for college. At college, she attended classes, chatted with her friends. Then she came home from college. Tired and exhausted. She had something to eat, went to her room and turned her laptop on. After a while she got bored. So she checked her phone for notifications. After spending hours on her phone and her laptop in turns, it was time for her dinner. She had dinner and went to sleep. “Tomorrow is a new day”, she sighed as she dozed off.
